Where does VET fit? · Victoria

VET counts towards your VCE, and can open its own door to university.

In Victoria, VET can count towards the VCE or VCE Vocational Major. Its effect on the ATAR depends on how it is studied. A completed Certificate IV or Diploma can also be used to apply to university in its own right.

1

VCE or VCE VM

VET units count towards the 16 units you need to complete the VCE.

2

The ATAR, in part

Scored VCE VET counts like a VCE study. Other VET adds at most a small increment.

3

Its own way into university

A completed Certificate IV or Diploma can be assessed by universities on its own.

1 · VCE

VET counts towards finishing school

The VCE is completed by satisfactorily finishing at least 16 units. VET can make up part of those units, in two ways.

16

units, satisfactorily completed

3

English-group units, including a Unit 3–4 sequence

3

other Unit 3–4 sequences

VCE VET programs

VET programs built into the VCE, with Unit 1–4 structures. Some have scored assessment for Units 3–4, so they can count towards the ATAR like any VCE study.

Block credit for other VET

Other approved qualifications at Certificate II or above. Each 90 nominal hours of completed units earns 1 VCE unit.

Certificate II

up to 6 units · Units 1–2

Certificate III

up to 6 units · Units 1–4

Certificate IV and above

up to 4 units · Units 3–4 only

On the VCE Vocational Major, VET at Certificate II level or above is a required part of the program.

2 + 3 · University

Two ways VET can help you into university

In Victoria the second route usually matters more for a Certificate IV or Diploma.

Route 1

The ATAR, in part

VTAC builds the ATAR from your best four scaled studies (including English), plus 10% of a fifth and a sixth.

English

+10%

+10%

Scored VCE VET: counts like a VCE study, in the main four or as an increment.

Unscored VCE VET (Units 3–4): an increment worth 10% of your fourth study score.

Other VET by block credit: may also earn an increment.

If a program offers scored assessment and you skip it, it adds nothing to the ATAR.

Route 2

Its own way into university

Completing a Certificate IV or higher meets the minimum tertiary entrance requirement for courses through VTAC. Each university then assesses the qualification under its own rules.

RMIT

Rank set by the level of your highest VET qualification

Monash

Certificate IV or a graded Diploma meets the minimum for some courses

Melbourne

Diploma in a relevant discipline only, selected on marks

Swinburne

Guaranteed entry for a Victorian TAFE Diploma

Graded results help: some universities select Diploma holders on their marks.

Before you count on it

Rules differ by university

Some courses do not admit applicants on a VET qualification alone.

Guarantees name partners

Guaranteed entry and credit are usually tied to specific TAFEs or providers.

Prerequisites still apply

A qualification does not replace VCE studies a course requires.

Check the year you apply

Admission rules change between years. Always confirm with the university.
