Where it fits › Tasmania

Where does VET fit? · Tasmania

In Tasmania, VET builds your TCE and opens its own way into university.

VET earns credit points towards the 120 you need for the Tasmanian Certificate of Education. It does not count in the Tasmanian ATAR, but a completed Certificate IV meets the University of Tasmania’s general entry requirement for bachelor degrees.

TASC courses + your VET qualification

1

The TCE

Every 10 hours of VET earns 1 credit point towards the 120 you need.

→

2

Not in the ATAR

Only TASC Level 3 and 4 courses count towards the Tasmanian ATAR.

Its own way into university

A completed Certificate IV meets UTAS’s entry requirement for bachelor degrees.

1 · TCE

VET counts towards finishing school

The TCE is built from credit points, and each course is rated for complexity. VET earns credit points like any other study, at the level of the qualification.

120

credit points needed for the TCE

80

or more of them at complexity Level 2 or higher

+

the everyday adult standards in reading and writing, maths, and computers and the internet

How VET turns into credit points

TASC counts the nominal hours of the units you complete. Hours are divided by 10 and rounded.

10 nominal hours

1 credit point

Certificate I

complexity Level 1

Certificate II

complexity Level 2

Certificate III

complexity Level 3

A whole qualification counts at its own level, even before it is finished. The same unit never earns credit points twice.

What VET cannot replace

Reading, writing and communication

in English

Mathematics

everyday standard

Computers and the internet

everyday standard

Each standard is met through a TASC course that includes it, or a safety-net test. VET does not meet them.

Credit points from a Certificate IV or Diploma count towards the 80 at Level 2 or higher. Check how TASC rates each qualification for the year you finish.

2 + 3 · University

In Tasmania, VET reaches university by its own route

The ATAR and a VET qualification are separate. Students can aim for one, or keep both open.

The ATAR

VET does not count here

TASC builds a Tertiary Entrance score from your best five Level 3 and 4 courses over two years, 15 points each, out of 75. VET qualifications are not among them.

You also need the TCE and Satisfactory Achievement or better in at least four Level 3 or 4 courses. A student can keep fewer courses on the ATAR pattern and use a Certificate IV for entry instead.

The VET route

Entry on the qualification itself

Apply directly to the University of Tasmania. A completed qualification meets its general entry requirement at these levels:

Certificate III

Pre-degree courses such as diplomas and associate degrees, in a relevant discipline

Certificate IV

Undergraduate (bachelor) courses

No ATAR

UTAS gives applicants without one an Assessed Entry Score

VET is a common route in: in 2025, 794 students, 14% of UTAS’s intake, were admitted on the basis of VET study.

Before you count on it

Check the level

Whether credit points count towards the 80 depends on the complexity level TASC gives each unit.

Keep the adult standards

Reading and writing, maths and ICT standards come from TASC courses, not VET.

Prerequisites still apply

Some UTAS courses need set TASC subjects or a qualification in a related field.

Admission rules change between years. Always confirm with the university.
