Where can VET take you?
Two directions open from the same starting point: go to work, or keep studying. Neither is the “right” one. They suit different plans.
VET
your qualification
↙ go to work
keep studying ↘
Pathway 01
Employment
Leave school already holding a nationally recognised qualification, and start work in the area you trained in.
✓ Entry-level and skilled roles in your field
✓ Traineeships and apprenticeships
Pathway 02
Further study
Keep building on what you finished: a higher VET qualification after school, or university.
✓ A higher VET level after school
✓ University entry pathways
Wherever you end up
The qualification does not stop at the border
Senior certificates and ATAR rules are set state by state. The qualification underneath them is national.
One qualification, eight jurisdictions
A Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma is issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework and listed on training.gov.au. It is the same qualification in every state and territory. What changes at a border is only how the local authority credits it, never the qualification itself.
It moves with you
Change schools, move interstate, finish after Year 12, come back to it years later — none of that changes what you hold. Employers anywhere in Australia read it the same way, and it does not expire.
A second way in
Where a state’s ATAR is closed to VET, a completed qualification can still carry you into further study on its own terms — as a selection rank, or as a diploma assessed in its own right. Different route, same offer.
Pathway example
Work first, university later
One student, four stages. Leaving school for work does not close the door on a degree.
01 · Year 12 →
Finishes school with a Certificate IV
Studies the Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication alongside senior subjects, and goes straight into work afterwards. No ATAR, because university was not the plan at the time.
02 · The next few years →
Works in the industry
The qualification is what opens the first role. Experience builds, but so does the ceiling on what the job can become.
03 · Later →
Decides on a degree
Now the goal is a bachelor degree. There is no ATAR to apply with, and school is years behind.
04 · The way in
Applies with a Diploma
Completes the Diploma of Business. Institutions assess a completed diploma in its own right, and it can carry credit towards the degree.
Bachelor study areas this diploma commonly leads to
You can start at any level. You don't need a Certificate III before a Certificate IV. Each qualification is recognised nationally, whether or not you continue to the next one.
University admission rules vary between institutions and can change between admission years. Always confirm current requirements directly with the institution you are applying to.
